Il propose de concevoir ce procédé non pas uniquement comme l’expression de reproches, mais avant tout comme un processus réflexif de légitimation démocratique, c’est-à-dire une volonté de regagner la confiance citoyenne qui tend à s’étioler. Dans un espace public où s’expriment des opinions contrastées, la critique publique constitue un objet de recherche autant pertinent que fascinant. Elle rend visible la façon dont les acteurs institutionnels explicitent leurs pratiques.Reposant sur de nombreux cas concrets en France, dans le canton de Genève en Suisse, dans la province du Québec au Canada et en Belgique francophone, l’auteur relie critique publique et démocratie, mettant en lumière les richesses, mais aussi les limites d’un mécanisme central de la communication publique.
