Elle était venue parce qu’un Allemand qu’elle n’avait jamais rencontré avait organisé son voyage depuis Munich ; et parce qu’une enveloppe scellée, glissée dans son sac, renfermait selon ses instructions un contenu qu’elle n’était autorisée à découvrir qu’une fois installée dans une cuisine bien précise, au cœur d’un village français bien précis, en présence d’une femme bien précise. Lorsque l’enveloppe fut enfin ouverte, ce qu’elle révélait bouleversa, une fois de plus, le cours des choses.*The Moldovan Cousin* est le quatrième volet de la très acclamée Série du Val de Loire de K. Draven Smith, et le premier à accorder une importance égale à une nouvelle protagoniste aux côtés de Vivienne. Ce roman nous entraîne bien plus loin que les précédents opus de la série d’une cuisine de librairie française à un village moldave, jusqu’à la lecture d’un testament à Munich en suivant Sofia Andreeva alors qu’elle commence à comprendre que la grand-mère qui l’a élevée portait en elle, depuis toujours, un fragment d’histoire trop vaste pour qu’une seule famille puisse en porter le poids à elle seule.Victor Bauer s’éteint au beau milieu du livre. Son testament, une fois lu, opère un ultime renversement de perspective : non pas sur ce qui s’est réellement passé, mais sur ce qui avait été voulu. Au fil des années écoulées depuis son arrivée dans le village, il s’était préparé à une mort qu’il savait inéluctable, tout en préparant l’héritage qu’il souhaitait laisser derrière lui. Or, ce qu’il lègue n’est pas un objet matériel. C’est une direction à suivre.
