Théodore de Bèze qui succéda à Jean Calvin en 1564 comme Modérateur de la Compagnie des Pasteurs de la Ville et de la République de Genève naquit le 24 juin 1519 dans la petite ville bourguignonne de Vézelay, ancien haut-lieu religieux de la Chrétienté médiévale. Il mourut le 13 octobre 1605 à l’âge de 86 ans. Pendant près de cinquante années - de 1558 à 1605 - Bèze fut au service de l’Église de Genève. Après la mort de l’Antistés de l’Église de Zurich, Heinrich Bullinger, en septembre 1575, Théodore de Bèze fut le chef incontesté de la cause réformée dans toute l’Europe.L’aspect pastoral de la théologie éminemment biblique de Bèze devient tout à fait évident à la lecture de son premier chef-d’œuvre doctrinal qui connut une renommée pleinement justifiée dans toutes les Églises issues de la Réforme. Il s’agit ici de La confession de foi du chrétien de 1556. Bèze l’écrivit explicitement pour son père à la fin de 1556 dans le but de tenter de l’amener à adhérer à la foi réformée. 3
