Así, a través de la revisión crítica de novelas, cuentos, crónicas de costumbres y artículos periodísticos producidos por algunos de los principales autores peruanos, en este libro se descubren las sucesivas transformaciones que sufre la ciudad tanto urbanísticas, sociales como culturales.El itinerario se inicia con la visión idílica de la ciudad de inicios de siglo propuesta por uno de los exponentes de la generación del Novecientos (José Gálvez), para dar paso a la transformación del paisaje urbanístico y el ritmo de la vida cotidiana en las novelas de José Diez Canseco y Martín Adán y, poco después, la llegada de las masas de migrantes, principalmente de origen andino, que traen consigo el legado de sus culturas y naciones. Lima, entonces, dejará definitivamente de ser la vieja ciudad criolla y colonial para convertirse en una urbe cuyos límites físicos se expandirán y cuyo complejo entramado social reproducirá la heterogeneidad de la nación como se demuestra sucesivamente en los textos de los escritores de la generación del 50 (Ribeyro, Congrains Martín, Salazar Bondy, Zavaleta, Loayza, Vargas Llosa, Reynoso, entre otros) y la más reciente obra de quienes asumieron el reto de reinventar el espacio de la urbe en sus ficciones (Bravo, Urteaga, Higa, Jara).
