Alessandria fu fondata da Alessandro Magno nel 331 a.C. intorno a una piccola città dell’Antico Egitto. Divenne un importante centro della civiltà ellenistica e rimase la capitale dell’Egitto ellenistico, romano e bizantino per quasi 1000 anni. L’Alessandria ellenistica era nota soprattutto per il Faro di Alessandria (Pharos), una delle Sette Meraviglie del Mondo Antico, la sua Grande Biblioteca (la più grande del mondo antico, oggi sostituita da una moderna) e la Necropoli, una delle Sette Meraviglie del Medioevo. Alessandria era la seconda città più potente del mondo antico dopo Roma. L’archeologia marittima in corso nel porto di Alessandria, iniziata nel 1994, sta rivelando dettagli su Alessandria sia prima dell’arrivo di Alessandro, quando esisteva una città chiamata Rhacotis, sia durante la dinastia tolemaica. Pertanto, questo libro fornisce una nuova scoperta da un’antichità sommersa di questa città porti che identificare da indagine geofisica marina integrata da osservazioni subacquee, 2011.
