La chimica è senza dubbio una materia vasta che si concentra su varie molecole sia inorganiche che organiche. Queste molecole sono classificate in prodotti chimici di laboratorio, biomolecole, prodotti farmaceutici, agenti bellici, prodotti chimici domestici, prodotti chimici industriali, cosmetici, coloranti e molti altri ingredienti. Tutte le molecole sono strutturate a partire dagli elementi della tavola periodica di Mendeleev, che sono ancora una volta sottoclassificati in metalli e non metalli, che si uniscono l’uno all’altro con la proprietà della catenazione mediante un legame elettrovalente, un legame coordinato e un legame covalente mediante la regola dell’ibridazione della teoria degli orbitali atomici s, p, d ed f. Ogni elemento ha una sua proprietà chimica originale che forma un composto con caratteristiche individuali. Queste sostanze chimiche reagiscono con altre sostanze chimiche in vivo (all’interno del sistema vivente), in vitro (al di fuori del sistema vivente), in-situ (all’interno del recipiente di reazione) e in-silico (all’interno del software computazionale) per sviluppare una nuova entità attraverso il gruppo funzionale ad esso collegato, che può essere una sintesi a passo singolo o multiplo o una biosintesi. La chimica è un campo di gioco di gruppi funzionali, di cui si occupa questo capitolo del libro insieme ai Premi Nobel.
