La chanson a joué un rôle déterminant dans la préparation et la perpétration du génocide contre les Tutsi du Rwanda. Clé de voûte de l’oralité, les chants ont été présents à chaque instant du drame. Ils ont incité les tueurs du Hutu power à commettre l’innommable comme ils ont soutenu et mené vers la victoire les combattants du Front patriotique rwandais.Après le génocide, ils sont devenus chants de mémoire pour porter témoignage de l’indicible. Ils ont alors rendu hommage aux disparus, assisté les survivants puis accompagné le pays dans son projet de résilience.Tour à tour meurtrière, libératrice, pédagogue ou consolatrice, la chanson s’est façonnée aux évènements en y adaptant ses formes et son langage musical. En découvrant la singularité de ces différents répertoires, l’ouvrage délivre un éclairage musicologique inédit sur des rythmes et des mélodies qui eurent leur part de responsabilité mais aussi de vérité dans la tragédie rwandaise.
