Verso la metà del mese di aprile del 1941, mentre era in pieno svolgimento l’offensiva tedesca nei Balcani contro la Jugoslavia e la Grecia, campagne che l’efficientissima macchina bellica germanica concluse rapidamente nello spazio di due settimane, il generale Kurt Student, comandante dell’11º Corpo Aereo (XI Fliegerkorps) dislocato nella Germania centrale, esaminò la possibilità di occupare l’isola di Creta, che rappresentava l’ultimo baluardo britannico nella zona dell’Egeo. L’impresa doveva svolgersi mediante uno sbarco in forze di truppe aviotrasportate, per poi impiegarle, a operazione conclusa, per conquistare il Canale di Suez. In questo libro verrà analizzato anche il contributo offerto dalle forze armate italiane all’operazione, partendo dalle loro basi operative in Grecia e nelle isole del Dodecanneso. 3
