Un matin, le docteur Bare est retrouvé mort au bord de la chaussée, visiblement victime d’un guet-apens. Les gendarmes trouvent un manuscrit, rédigé par la victime, apparemment oublié par les assassins.Ainsi, dans son manuscrit, le docteur Bare raconte ses retrouvailles avec un de ses amis, Jean Lebris. Celui-ci avait disparu durant la Première Guerre mondiale, après une bataille durant laquelle il perdit la vue. Il fut récupéré par les troupes allemandes, puis confié à un mystérieux docteur qui l’utilisa pour expérimenter un nouveau traitement ophtalmologique. Le docteur Bare cherche à percer le secret que lui cache Jean Lebris après son retour dans son village natal.
