Der kritische Realismus (CR) ist allgemein bekannt für seine angebliche und praktikable Fähigkeit, eine realistische Ontologie mit einer relativistischen/konstruktivistischen Erkenntnistheorie erfolgreich zu kombinieren und in Einklang zu bringen. CR übernimmt eine ontologisch-realistische Position, die die Welt in das Reale, das Tatsächliche und das Empirische einteilt und davon ausgeht, dass die Welt zwar da draußen existiert, aber das, was wir erleben, unserer Interpretation unterliegt. Diese doppelte Anerkennung ist in der Sozialwissenschaft relativ neu. Außerdem ist CR eine post-positivistische methodologische Orientierung. Daher kann sie in der Sozialforschung seriöse und nützliche Arbeit leisten, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Konzeptualisierung und Durchführung qualitativer Forschung. CR erlaubt es auch, den 'intellektualistischen Irrtum' zu vermeiden, indem man vermeintlich widersprüchliche Dinge wie Struktur und Handlung im Sinne einer Dialektik betrachtet und einen 'Und-und'-Ansatz statt eines 'Entweder-Oder'-Ansatzes fördert. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es nicht, eine erschöpfende Darstellung der CR zu geben, sondern vielmehr einige ihrer wichtigsten philosophischen und methodologischen Implikationen aufzuzeigen. Es ist zu hoffen, dass diese Arbeit eine alternative, prägnante (und vielleicht laienhafte) Einführung in CR und seine Forschungsimplikationen sein kann.
