Aber inwieweit sind diese Notizen repräsentativ für die tägliche Kriegsrealität? Wie sahen die Kriegswirklichkeit und der Soldatenalltag für die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Nordnorwegen eingesetzten deutschen Soldaten aus?Darüber gibt die vorliegende Studie an einem exemplarischen Fall Auskunft. Die dokumentarische Basis der Untersuchung bilden die Kriegserinnerungen des 'Stadtbauführers' Paul Schmidt (1900 - 1973) aus der osthessischen Kleinstadt Rotenburg an der Fulda, der im Bau-Ersatz-Bataillon 9 und im Festungs-Pionier-Stab 18, Abschnittsgruppe II, Dienst tat. Mehr als zweieinhalb Jahre seines Lebens hat Paul Schmidt während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in der nordnorwegischen Stadt Hammerfest verbracht (1942-1944). Schwerpunktmäßig über die Kriegswirklichkeit und den Soldatenalltag in diesem Einsatzgebiet informiert folglich dieses Buch, aber auch über seinen Einsatz nahe Narvik (1941) und über die Zeit seiner Kriegsgefangenschaft in Frankreich (1945/46) ist viel Bedeutsames zu erfahren. Außerdem wird die mit besonderer Dynamik geführte Auseinandersetzung um seine Wiedereinstellung als Rotenburger 'Stadtbautechniker' (1951) thematisiert.Bei der dokumentarischen Basis handelt es sich um Tagebuch-Aufzeichnungen, Fotografien und weitere individuell bedeutsame (auch unikale) persönliche Erinnerungsstücke, die durch dieses Buch erstmals der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden. Wissenschaftlich eingeordnet werden die persönlichen Kriegserinnerungen im Forschungskontext Tradierung von Vergangenheit durch das 'Familiengedächtnis', wobei die vorliegende Studie die bisherigen auf diesem Gebiet betriebenen Forschungen in besonderer Weise erweitert.
