Simon Kavelensky, facing imminent reconscription into the Russian army, the threat of a pogrom, and a life of traditional boredom, is not about to reconcile himself to a bleak and probable future. Escaping Imperialist Russia into Poland, Simon soon finds that love and a love of family will provide him with the impetus needed to make his way across Europe to England and finally to America. Will the land of opportunity provide Simon and his growing family with the life they dreamed, or will the perils of travel and a tumultuous sea voyage be their ultimate demise?About the Author John S. Gould is Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service of the Orthopaedic Division of the University of Alabama. Just a few of his notable achievements in recent years include serving as editor-in-chief of Microsurgery and the American Journal of Orthopaedics; serving as President of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society, Mid America Orthopaedic Society, and the Alabama Orthopaedic Society; and authoring four books, including his latest, The Handbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery: An Intellectual Approach to Complex Problems, in 2013. Gould's work with hand, foot, and ankle patients at the University of Alabama at Birmingham earned him the esteemed title of Professor Emeritus of the UAB School of Medicine by the Board of Trustees in 2014. Gould currently lives in Birmingham, with his wife, Sheryl. They are the proud parents of four children and the equally proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. Together, they enjoy spending their summers at Joe's Pond in Vermont, where they play golf and take evening cruises with their beloved dog, Sammy, on their pontoon boat, the Edith Marion.
