Filozoficzno-religijna wizja Heschela dotycząca człowieka głosi, że jest on immanentnym przejawem Boskości w każdym zjawisku wszechświata i każdym ludzkim działaniu. Jednak wraz z nadejściem nowoczesności rozpoczęła się inna proces, spowodowany tym, że cywilizacja, nazywana nowoczesną, nie zdaje sobie sprawy, że im bardziej oddala się od wartości transcendentalnych, tym bardziej sprzyja dehumanizacji. Abraham Joshua Heschel identyfikuje w ten sposób podstawowe zatrucie współczesnej cywilizacji: zaćmienie sacrum. Pod tym pojęciem rozumie śmierć „duszy' współczesnego człowieka. W ten sposób wybuch barbarzyństwa nie jest zaskoczeniem, ale zgubną konsekwencją pozorów humanizmu, które pozostały, gdy człowiek nie jest już postrzegany z należnym mu szacunkiem. W tym kontekście należy wziąć pod uwagę próby nawiązania dialogu z nową sytuacją, którą ujawniła nowoczesność; dehumanizację człowieka, widoczną przede wszystkim w historycznym kontekście Holokaustu. Niezbędne jest rozważenie koncepcji samoświadomości jako sposobu odpowiedzi na ludzkie niepokoje w konfrontacji z nowymi wartościami i nowymi nowoczesnymi wytycznymi, które niszczą żydowski sposób postrzegania świata.
