Das Ziel dieses Buches war es, die Wirksamkeit, Farbstabilität, Zahnempfindlichkeit und Genotoxizität der Zahnaufhellung zu Hause mit 10 % Carbamidperoxid (CP) bei Rauchern und Nichtrauchern klinisch zu bewerten. Die Zahnaufhellung wurde mit 10 % CP (Whiteness Perfect - FGM, Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brasilien) über einen Zeitraum von drei Wochen täglich drei Stunden lang durchgeführt. Die Farbe wurde anhand der Vita Classical-Skala, des Vita Bleachedguide 3D-MASTER und des Spektralphotometers Vita Easyshade (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Deutschland) zu Beginn der Zahnaufhellung (1., 2. und 3. Woche) und nach diesem Verfahren (1 Woche und 1 Monat) bewertet. Die Zahnsensibilität wurde von den Patienten selbst anhand einer Skala von 0 bis 4 und einer 10 cm langen visuellen Analogskala (VAS) erfasst. Die Genotoxizität der Aufhellung wurde anhand der Häufigkeit von Mikronuklei (MN) im Zahnfleischgewebe vor und nach der Aufhellung bewertet.
