Many of my poems reflect the effort to know or to build some structure around things or ideas that I haven’t yet figured out.  It’s like E.M. Forster who said, “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”  One could also ask, How do I know what I’ll say until I think it? or ...How do I know what I’ll say until I write it? Er...another place my poems may be coming from:  confusion.  In general, confusion is a starting point for many poems.  Perhaps especially the poems that are humorous or trying to be.  After all, confusion is funny.  Imagine someone who is wearing a heavy hat in summer.  He’s dying to take it off, because he’s hot.  But somehow any place or surface nearby that could accommodate the hat, doesn’t seem at all appropriate.  Certainly, not on the St. John’s Wort bush beside the veranda!  You can see him running around brandishing his hat in search of a place to put it, sweating and swearing in his disconcerting conundrum. In the present collection much of the confusion is expressed  with regard to things rather than people, sometimes in a weirdly exaggerated way.  Perhaps not raucously funny.  But...gently abrasive?

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

  • The Silent Lyre/La Lira Silente

These sonnets are among the most beautiful of her early compositions. While the novelist, architect, and poet Thomas Hardy equated Millay’s sonnets with America’s great skyscrapers, the American intelligentsia, no doubt influenced by her popularity, awarded her the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, at thirty-one years of age, the third woman to have won the award for poetry. Questi sonet...
