This book is very well-researched, and I felt immersed in Ainu culture. Shocking how not much has changed as modern comparisons are easily made. I loved it. I read some to my mum in the car on the way to York, and she loved it. The part of the slavers was really exciting. IT’S EASY TO IMAGINE KIMYO AND FUSA’s courageous and exciting life and love story as a fantastic live-action with animation, or a straight film? Probably made in Japan, or perhaps South Korea, since they end their story on Jeju Island.Their story remains topical. The Japanese government has recently begun to acknowledge and support the historical Ainu culture and its impact on the Japanese Islands; an increasing feature of tourism in Hokkaido. There is an enduring debate in Japan regarding same-sex marriage. And, as in all countries, women and girls experience oppression and violence on an appalling scale, trapped in the controlling ignorance of many patriarchal cultures which persist well beyond their sell-by date. So their story will resonate beyond the shores of Japan. And, whether LGBTQIA+ or heterosexual, whoever you are, this is an uplifting love story for all, anywhere.
