Die bei der Spaltungsreaktion erzeugten Neutronen werden für verschiedene Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten, die Radioisotopenproduktion, zerstörungsfreie Prüfungen und andere damit zusammenhängende Tätigkeiten verwendet. Ein Kernreaktor ist ein System, das anhaltende nukleare Kettenreaktionen enthält und kontrolliert. Reaktoren werden zur Stromerzeugung, zum Antrieb von Flugzeugträgern und U-Booten, zur Herstellung medizinischer Isotope für bildgebende Verfahren und die Krebsbehandlung sowie für Forschungszwecke eingesetzt.
