In der Zahnmedizin ist Keramik eine der vier Hauptkategorien von Materialien, die für die Wiederherstellung von kariösen, beschädigten oder fehlenden Zähnen verwendet werden. Zu den anderen drei Kategorien gehören Metalle, Polymere und Verbundwerkstoffe. Ihre Anwendungen gehen über die Zahnmedizin hinaus und umfassen Töpferwaren, Porzellanglas, feuerfeste Materialien, Schleifmittel, Hitzeschilde für Space Shuttles, Bremsscheiben für Hochleistungsfahrzeuge und kugelförmige Komponenten in künstlichen Hüftgelenken. In der Zahnmedizin wird Keramik in großem Umfang für die Herstellung von künstlichen Zähnen, Kronen, Brücken, Keramikstiften, Abutments, Implantaten und Verblendschalen, die Metallgerüste überlagern, verwendet. Die individuelle Anpassung von Keramik für zahnmedizinische Zwecke wird durch eine sorgfältige Kontrolle der Art und des Verhältnisses der bei der Herstellung verwendeten Materialien erreicht. Das Aufkommen computergestützter Systeme für die Herstellung von Zahnersatz in Verbindung mit Fortschritten bei neuartigen Mikrostrukturen für keramische Werkstoffe hat die klinischen Arbeitsabläufe für Zahnärzte und Zahntechniker sowie die Palette der Behandlungsmöglichkeiten für Patienten erheblich verändert.
