Die Herstellung von Chemikalien und Kraftstoffen aus lignozellulosehaltigen Materialien stößt bei den Forschern auf besonderes Interesse, da sich fossile Kraftstoffe negativ auf die Umwelt auswirken und die geopolitischen Probleme im Zusammenhang mit Erdöl auf der ganzen Welt zunehmen. Aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten zeigen, dass die Herstellung von Ethanol der zweiten Generation aus lignozellulosehaltigen Materialien eine alternative Technologie darstellt. Sisalfasern sind ein lignozellulosehaltiges Material, das im Wesentlichen aus Zellulose (58 %), Hemizellulose (15 %) und Lignin (11 %) besteht, was sie zu einer Alternative für die Ethanolproduktion der zweiten Generation im Nordosten Brasiliens macht, da es sich um eine Pflanze mit einem beträchtlichen Kohlenhydratgehalt handelt, der in fermentierbare Zucker abgebaut werden kann.
