El Kamasutra (“El libro del amor”) es el más antiguo de los tratados eróticos. Consta de 1250 versos, divididos en siete partes y 36 capítulos, escrito alternativamente en prosa y verso. Tuvo gran difusión y fue muy apreciado por su complejidad y por ser muy completo en su temática, así como por su valor desde el punto de vista sociológico y médico. El autor eleva al placer a la categoría de valor ético y elabora un libro técnico, al mismo tiempo de amena lectura, y en donde en forma rigurosa se describen las artes amatorias y las formas de cortejar, de tener un aspecto agradable, de elaborar bebidas estimulantes y afrodisíacos, de mantener el cariño del amante, de las varias maneras de gozar en el acto del amor con las muchachas, con las mujeres casadas, con las mujeres unidas a otro, con las cortesanas, etc.
