Das Junktionale Epithel ist ein spezialisiertes, nicht keratinisiertes, geschichtetes Plattenepithel, das die epitheliale Verbindung zwischen der Gingiva und der Zahnoberfläche bildet. Es entsteht aus dem reduzierten Schmelzepithel während der Zahneruption und befindet sich an der Basis des gingivalen Sulkus, der sich von der Zement-Schmelz-Grenze nach apikal erstreckt. Histologisch gesehen ist es dünn, hat keine Keratinisierung und keine Rete-Zapfen und weist weite interzelluläre Räume mit einer hohen Zellumsatzrate auf. Das Junktionalepithel ist über eine interne Basallamina und Hemidesmosomen mit dem Zahn verbunden und ermöglicht die Migration von Entzündungszellen und Gingivakrebsflüssigkeit, wodurch es eine wichtige Rolle bei der parodontalen Abwehr und Gesundheit spielt.
