Robert Mayers Theorie der Mechanik der Warme ist unbe­ stritten eine der glanzendsten naturwissenschaftlichen Errungen­ schaften des letztvergangenen J ahrhunderts gewesen, und zwar hat sich nicht nur die Aufstellung und die Darlegung der Grund­ prinzipien, welche bereits ebenso von verschiedenen anderen Seiten in Angriff genommen war und auch ohne Mayers Arbeit durch die vereinten Krafte dieser anderen Forscher erreicht worden ware, als eine kapitale und fruchtbringende Tat erwiesen, sondern es ist namentlich auch von den Fachkundigen anerkannt worden, daB die Grundgedanken der Lehre von keinem dieser ubrigen ursprunglichen Mitbegrunder so prazis und so allgemeingultig ge­ faBt und diese selbst von keinem so konsequent und vielseitig weitergefUhrt worden ist, als von Mayer, neben dem auch von den andern Bearbeitern des Problems beinahe nur noch Helm­ holtz genannt werden kann. Dies hangt nur zum Teil damit zu­ sammen, daB Mayer als Arzt eher und besser ein Urteil uber die Bedeutung seiner Resultate fUr die organische Welt gewann. 'DaB Sie in einer kleinen Provinzialstadt und in Anspruch genommen von den Obliegenheiten Ihres Berufs' , schrieb Tyn­ dall, Professor der Physik der 'Royal Institution', am 11. Jam~ar 1866 an Mayer, 'allen anderen so weit vorausgeeilt sind, ist fUr mich erstaunlich. Ich kenne keinen ahnlichen Fall in der Ge­ schichte der Wissenschaft.
