El protagonista nace en un túnel del metro de Madrid. En la oscuridad del túnel no puede ver muy bien a su madre, que pronto muere, aunque siempre recordará su olor. Una pestilencia que él siempre asociará al amor. Expulsado del túnel por la policía junto a los demás vagabundos en los años 80 del SXX, va a dar a un barrio de la periferia de la ciudad. Allí se cría solo y clandestino. No tiene nombre y ha nacido dos veces: la primera de entre las piernas de su madre y la segunda de entre las piernas de Madrid, representabas por la boca de metro. Su vida de perdición y vicio consistirá a partir de entonces en intentar encontrarse a sí mismo, cosa improbable ya que Mercurio domina su alma.
