Lernen und Bildung sind im Rahmen der öffentlichen Debatte um Ganztagsbildung wieder stärker in den Blickpunkt gerückt. Insbesondere die Frage nach der Qualität schulischer Lernprozesse hat breite Resonanz gefunden. Informelle Lernprozesse, die außerhalb dieser Institution stattfinden, im Kindes- und Jugendalter aber an der Tagesordnung sind, blieben bislang eher unberücksichtigt. Vor diesem Hintergrund geht die Studie als eine der ersten empirischen Untersuchungen der Frage nach, welche Bedeutung außerschulische Lernerfahrungen für die Bildung Heranwachsender haben. Für die Studie wurden über zweitausend Jugendliche (15- bis 18-jährig) befragt. Dieser Band dokumentiert die Ergebnisse der Studie und gibt einen Überblick über ihre außerschulischen Aktivitäten. In einem neuen Vorwort für die zweite Auflage wird die aktuelle Forschungslandschaft des informellen Lernens beschrieben und auf neue und veränderte Fragestellungen hingewiesen.
