¿Cómo reacciona una persona al enterarse de que padece una enfermedad crónica que trastoca su estilo de vida? ¿De qué manera afecta su estabilidad emocional, las relaciones con sus familiares y amigos y con su entorno? Las respuestas a estas preguntas, difíciles en sí mismas, pueden ser más angustiantes si el diagnóstico se realiza a una persona joven y la enfermedad es el virus de inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). Alrededor del VIH/sida hay muchos estigmas sociales, que hacen que los pacientes, además de las sensaciones de injusticia, minusvalía, tristeza, indefensión y desasosiego, se generen sentimientos de rechazo y exclusión social. Todo ello conlleva a pensamientos suicidas, pues, en un primer momento, no se logra dilucidar cómo se podrá continuar la vida. Sin embargo, lo que evidencia este estudio es que los jóvenes poseen recursos psicológicos que les permiten crear estrategias y mecanismos de afrontamiento para vivir con la enfermedad, que se convierten en factores de protección frente al riesgo suicida. El objetivo de este trabajo, entonces, es evidenciar estos recursos con el fin de profundizar en su estudio y comprensión, lo que permitirá la construcción de protocolos de ayuda y asistencia más efectivos para apoyar a personas que se encuentren en esta situación. 10
