Women have often been ignored by society. This began when women were considered property. It was considered the woman’s fault if she complained of any overt actions by men. They were accused of dressing sexy and flirting with the man. If a woman worked outside the home, it was seen as grounds for saying she was a poor mother. They were also paid less than men.    Magazines were aimed at women. A stay-at-home mother saw pictures of makeup, perfumes, vacuums, sheets, new dish designs, and anything the woman might use at home. Home life was a continuous process of caring for the children, making beds, washing clothes, making dinner, and many other tasks. Married women were supposed to be virgins on their wedding day. In the sixties, women were tired of this role and were searching for identity. Women fought for independence from their role as homemakers. Journey to a Heartache is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that follows Maddie, a young woman navigating the complexities of independence, relationships, and self-discovery in the early 1960s. Set against the backdrop of changing social norms, Maddie’s journey is one of courage and resilience. Despite facing difficult and traumatic experiences, she demonstrates strength as she seeks to reclaim her sense of self and dignity. The story highlights the importance of personal growth, the search for identity, and the enduring hope for a better future. Through vivid storytelling and authentic characters, Susan Holloway sheds light on the challenges women have faced and celebrates their ability to persevere and find meaning even in the face of adversity.Journey to a Heartache is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for healing and transformation, offering readers a message of hope and empowerment.

In the 1930s, Freud observed that 'when you meet a human being, the first distinction you make is ’male or female?’ and you are accustomed to make the distinction with unhesitating certainty.' As Freud suggests, society is divisible by gender. We are taken to be either 'male' or 'female.' This notion seems to be fixed within our culture and is often unquestioned. In this dynami...
