''Johnson: Vanity of Human Wishes'' is a literary work by Samuel Johnson, first published in 1749. The book is a poem which explores the theme of human ambition and the futility of worldly pursuits. Johnson uses a variety of historical and mythological figures to illustrate his point, including Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and the Greek god Hercules. The poem is divided into sections, each examining a different aspect of human desire, such as wealth, power, and fame. Despite its bleak outlook, the poem ultimately offers a message of hope, encouraging readers to focus on spiritual fulfillment and the pursuit of virtue rather than material success. This edition of the book was published in 1876 and includes an introduction by the editor, as well as notes and annotations to help readers better understand the text. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
