John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) wurde in Florenz geboren. Sargent war Amerikaner, aber viele hielten ihn für einen Weltbürger. Zu Lebenszeiten war er weltweit der am meisten gefragte, gefeiertste und teuerste Porträtmaler.Abgesehen von einigen Besuchen in seinem Heimatland verbrachte er den Großteil seines Lebens im Ausland und war besonders von europäischer Kunst beeinflusst. Seine amerikanischen Wurzeln bleiben jedoch in seiner Kunst sichtbar, vor allem in seinem außerordentlichen Talent, Emotionen einzufangen, sowie in seiner Persönlichkeit und der Zartheit seiner Technik - Qualitäten, die bis heute die großen amerikanischen Künstler prägen.
