John Capgrave’s Lives of St. Augustine and St. Gilbert of Sempringham and a Sermon by Capgrave is a historical and religious book that explores the lives of two important figures in Christianity, St. Augustine and St. Gilbert of Sempringham. The book is written by John Capgrave, an English author and theologian who lived in the 15th century. The Lives of St. Augustine and St. Gilbert of Sempringham are two separate biographies that are included in this book. The biography of St. Augustine explores his life and teachings as one of the most important figures in the early Christian church. It covers his conversion to Christianity, his role in the development of Christian theology, and his impact on the church. The biography of St. Gilbert of Sempringham explores the life of this lesser-known saint who founded the Order of Gilbertines, a religious order that focused on caring for the poor and sick. The biography covers his early life, his religious awakening, and his work in establishing the order. In addition to the biographies, the book also includes a sermon by John Capgrave. The sermon is a religious text that explores themes of faith, salvation, and the importance of living a virtuous life.Overall, John Capgrave’s Lives of St. Augustine and St. Gilbert of Sempringham and a Sermon by Capgrave is a valuable historical and religious text that provides insight into the lives of two important figures in Christianity and offers a glimpse into the religious beliefs and practices of the 15th century.1910. Capgrave, learned traveler and friar of Lynn in Norfolk, was an indefatigable student, and reputed to be the best known man of letters of his time. His reputation came from the greater part of his works which are theological: sermons, commentaries and lives of saints. A noble gentlewoman begged Capgrave to write St. Augustine for her; St. Gilbert was translated in the same form, save some additions, at the prayer of Nicholas Reysby, Master of the order of St. Gilbert and designed for the anchoresses of that order. Capgrave appends a translated summary of his sermon on the various Augustinian orders, preached in Cambridge, 1422, but revised later, for Reysby and others who wished to know diffusely of the subject.
