Jeremiah

'Jeremiah : A Drama in Nine Scenes' is a powerful expressionist play by the acclaimed Austrian author Stefan Zweig. This dramatic work reimagines the biblical narrative of the prophet Jeremiah during the siege and eventual destruction of Jerusalem. Through nine evocative scenes, Zweig explores the harrowing conflict between the visionary individual and the collective fervor of a nation driven toward its own ruin.Jeremiah is portrayed as a tragic figure of immense moral courage, a man burdened by the weight of unwanted prophecy who chooses the path of peace and spiritual integrity over the clamor for war and political glory. The play serves as a profound meditation on the futility of violence and the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of catastrophe. Zweig’s lyrical prose and deep psychological insight transform the ancient story into a universal parable about the struggle for truth and humanism.Stefan Zweig brings a modern sensibility to this biblical setting, emphasizing the timeless nature of the prophet’s warnings and the cyclical nature of human history. 'Jeremiah : A Drama in Nine Scenes' stands as a significant contribution to early 20th-century theatre and remains a poignant testament to the author’s lifelong commitment to pacifist ideals. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
