Jenny Graham, on the threshold of what she hoped would be a glittering acting career, had been easily impressed by the lavish and extravagant lifestyle of the man she had once known as Ben Standish. From that moment her life was in danger. Ironically, there is a reversal of roles with Jenny now the fugitive as systematically and ruthlessly Ben made plans to silence her and anyone else who posed a threat to him. Malta is mainly the backdrop to this 'cat and mouse' game, but through her own tenacity and, at times, impulsiveness, Jenny succeeds to outwit him, but not before the tragic death of someone close to her. The murder of her friend shatters forever her romantic illusions, making her realise her own carefree and charmed life was finally over.
