Jenny Graham, on the threshold of what she hoped would be a glittering acting career, had been easily impressed by the lavish and extravagant lifestyle of the man she had once known as Ben Standish. During two weeks' holiday in the idyllic surroundings of the South of France their affair had been passionate and brief, but ten years later her memories of him had long been soured on learning everything about him was completely false. Ben Standish was not his real name; not only was he an imposter, but he had created a new and what he considered a foolproof identity in the wake of masterminding a massive banking fraud in London some years earlier and continuing to avoid arrest until Jenny sees him one night in a casino in Malta. From that moment her life was in danger. Ironically, there is a reversal of roles with Jenny now the fugitive as systematically and ruthlessly Ben made plans to silence her and anyone else who posed a threat to him. Malta is mainly the backdrop to this 'cat and mouse' game, but through her own tenacity and, at times, impulsiveness, Jenny succeeds to outwit him, but not before the tragic death of someone close to her. The murder of her friend shatters forever her romantic illusions, making her realise her own carefree and charmed life was finally over.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
