Rousseau, escritor y filósofo, influyó en gran medida la Revolución francesa, lo que supuso el fin de la dominación feudal, los cimientos del régimen capitalista, el desarrollo del nacionalismo y las teorías republicanas modernas. La obra de Rousseau es una síntesis ideológica de la sociedad burguesa que compila el concepto de libertad y de sus límites, reglas de gobierno, misión del Estado, carácter de las leyes, principios fundamentales del derecho, papel de la religión y sus relaciones con el Estado. El Contrato Social (1762) puede considerarse como el código político de la burguesía europea del siglo XVIII. En él se establecen los fundamentos sobre los cuales debería consolidarse los cimientos de la nueva sociedad.   La voz de Rousseau también fue profundamente personal en dos de sus obras autobiográficas,  Meditaciones de Un Pasante Solitario y Cartas Escogidas.Teorías políticas y pensamientos personales de uno de los más influyentes filósofos del Siglo XVIII. 3
