Diese Merkmale spiegeln das tiefe Gefühl der Liebe jenseits des fleischlichen Vergnügens wider, ebenso wie die rätselhafte Umgebung, die über seinen Landschaften liegt, und den gesenkten Blick der Liebenden. Watteau besaß ein einzigartiges Genie für Farben, das ein Gefühl von Sanftheit und Geheimnis vermittelt, sowie eine Atmosphäre, die von einer Art musikalischer Qualität durchdrungen ist.
