Je Suis L’Autre: Essays and Interrogations, is a collection of lyric criticism that speaks to a rapidly changing literary landscape, with elements of personal narrative, craft analysis, and cultural commentary. By offering a hybrid approach to scholarly writing, Darling’s prose establishes a poetic sensibility as it examines a wide range of recent experimental and collaborative works of literature. The diverse texts discussed in this essay collection include Julie Marie Wade’s Wishbone, Sarah Manguso’s The Guardians, G.C. Waldrep and John Gallaher’s Your Father On The Train Of Ghosts, Anne Boyer’s Garments Against Women, Suzanne Scanlon’s Her 37th Year: An Index, and many others. Throughout Darling’s book, recent works of literature offer a point of entry to more ambitious questions about voice, affect, and conscious experience.

This compilation by Richard Gravil of texts edited by W J B Owen and J W Smyser presents the four major political texts in Wordsworth’s prose oeuvre and illustrates both the detail of the poet’s political grasp, and the remarkable swerves he made between 1793 and 1835. The first text, A Letter to the Bishop of Llandaff (1793) is severely Jacobinical. Had Wordsworth published it...

  • Tracing the Essay
    G. Douglas Atkins
The essay, as a notably hard form of writing to pin down, has inspired some unflattering descriptions: It is a greased pig, for example, or a pair of baggy pants into which nearly anything and everything can fit. In Tracing the Essay, G. Douglas Atkins embraces the very qualities that have moved others to accord the essay second-class citizenship in the world of letters.Drawing...

Spanning four books across a six year period, Darling’s selected delivers a natural cohesion, a sense of the single, complex gesture, sharply whittled from these formerly separate visions. In the opening poem, Darling writes, 'when she falls in love/ physical pain does not simply resist language but actively destroys it,' posing a thesis statement for the poems’ skeletal, clawi...

  • Stylistic Innovation, Conscious Experience, and the Self in Modernist Women’s Poetry
    Kristina Marie Darling
This critical study examines representations of philosophy in Modernist women's writing. Through the poetry of H.D., Gertrude Stein, Mina Loy, and Marianne Moore, this book shows how feminist writers used seemingly small stylistic choices to make necessary contributions to predominantly male philosophical discourses, ultimately rendering these conversations more inclusive. ...

    Kristina Marie Darling
The essays in this collection use a wide range of contemporary experimental texts as a point of entry to a single question: Is there a uniquely female variety of sorrow? This book does not provide a clean answer, but rather, an ongoing effort to refine the question. These essays ask what it means to be other, what it means to be othered by and through language, what it means to...

Kristina Marie Darling’s Correspondence is a miniaturist’s miniature, a seeming erasure leaving behind only subplots and footnotes and glossaries, secondary definitions nested beneath more primary meanings, salutations but not letters: Because perhaps where there is loss it is what remains after the story is told that is most beautiful, or else what proceeds it; not how we were...
