The 21st century has witnessed protests and revolts in many countries, most recently in the Arab world (i.e. Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and several others). This has been popularly dubbed the Arab Spring. Some of the governments running these countries in turmoil have been democratically elected. Others are, and have been, the products of military interventions. 'Democratic dictatorships' are the phenomena one sees when leaders, who were initially freely elected, are unwilling to cede power to the changing will of the people. It is estimated that 10% of the Islamic people (over 1.3 billion) are radicals, who would sacrifice their lives to fight for their principles, and to meet their objectives. Dictators may use these jihadists to further their goals, both internally and internationally. It should be possible to eliminate these dictators, and have them replaced with democratic leaders, without going to war. The author explains one of many strategies which could successfully depose an unwanted dictator.

  • Meritocrats

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...

In wars there are no winners. As in medicine, prevention (war avoidances) supersedes the effects of treatments (war conflicts). Also, as in medicine, there are two forms of prevention: primary (eliminate the factors that may lead to an illness), and secondary (when the illness occurs, complications may be avoided).Wars can be precipitated by the response to aggression, and by a...
