It’s Not Her

'A masterclass of OBSESSION, COMPLICITY, AND A SISTER’S LOVE that will hollow you out and hand you back changed...I could not look away.' - Cassia Mortensen'A FIERCELY ASSURED voice.' - Idris Vale'Quietly DEVASTATING. Berlanga writes guilt like she invented the word.' - Mathilde Sjögren'MESMERIZING...ruthlessly tender, beautifully cruel.' - August Brenner'The most UNFORGETTABLE thriller I’ve read this year.' - Halle WexfordA vanished sister. A stranger in her jacket. A family that would rather forgive the lie than face what is buried beneath it.Dana Whitlock is a high-school art teacher who has spent seven years learning how to look away. Seven years after her younger sister Robin vanished from their small Texas Hill Country town, the case is cold, the family is broken, and Dana has become an expert at the careful arrangement of grief. Then her mother calls on a Sunday evening. A woman is standing on the porch in Robin’s old denim jacket. Everyone believes her. Dana knows: it’s not her.She passes the DNA test. She passes the police, the neighbors, the church-supper questions about a childhood she shouldn’t remember. She passes Dana’s own mother, who weeps into the stranger’s hair and never once doubts. But the woman calling herself Robin is searching the locked study for something. The burner phone under the guest bed answers to a single saved contact. And the only person she truly fears is Lorraine Whitlock.Dana could let the lie live. She doesn’t. Across an autumn of mounting evidence - of a re-poured porch slab at her father’s hunting cabin, of a paternity-strength match that proves only that this woman is Carl Whitlock’s daughter, of a green duplex in Marfa Springs where a stranger with Robin’s cowlick once watered the plants - Dana, the imposter, and a cold-case detective begin to close in on a buried truth nobody in the family was ever meant to find. But the woman who came back is not the danger. The woman who welcomed her home is. By the time Dana understands what her mother has done - and what her mother knows about the night Robin really left - the only confession left to recover is the one Dana has carried for seven years.A novel of devastating intimacy, ferocious sisterhood, and a final unburied hour readers will not soon shake, It’s Not Her is about the secrets we mistake for love, the lies we tell to keep a family whole, and what it costs to finally say the right name aloud.
