Willem III, die bijna zijn hele leven tegen Lodewijk XIV streed, was er alles aan gelegen dat Keizer Leopold I, zijn bondgenoot in de anti-Franse coalitie, niet ook hoefde te vechten tegen de Turken. Daarom stelden Justinus Colyer en na zijn dood diens zoon Jacob, de Nederlandse ambassadeurs in Istanbul, alles in het werk om de vrede tussen de sultan en de keizer te handhaven (1668-1683).
