How deeply does Israel’s influence reach into British politics, public institutions and national security? This evidence-led investigation examines the complex and often controversial relationship between Britain and Israel. Beginning with the Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate for Palestine, the book traces how historical responsibility developed into a modern strategic partnership involving diplomacy, political lobbying, defence, intelligence, technology and trade. It explores the organisations and networks that promote closer relations with Israel, including Labour Friends of Israel, Conservative Friends of Israel, BICOM and We Believe in Israel. It considers how political donations, sponsored visits, private briefings and access to senior politicians may influence British policy, while carefully distinguishing documented connections from unsupported allegations. The book examines the approaches taken by leading political figures, from Tony Blair to Keir Starmer, as well as David Lammy and Wes Streeting. It asks why successive governments have defended international law in principle while often refusing to impose meaningful consequences on Israel for settlement expansion, military occupation and the treatment of Palestinians.Beyond Westminster, the investigation uncovers Britain’s growing technological and security relationship with Israel. It explores the UK-Israel Tech Hub, Unit 8200, Israeli surveillance companies, mobile-phone extraction systems and the increasing use of foreign technology within British policing and public services. It also raises important questions about who controls sensitive information held by the NHS, Home Office, police and Ministry of Defence. The book considers Britain’s defence relationship with Israel, including arms-export licences, military companies, the F-35 programme and the revolving door between government and the defence industry. A dedicated chapter investigates the hundreds of British surveillance flights conducted over Gaza from RAF Akrotiri. Although the government stated that these missions were intended solely to locate hostages, continuing secrecy has prevented the public from independently verifying how the intelligence was used or shared. It also examines the developing relationship between sections of Israel’s political right and the British far right. This includes Israeli political support for Tommy Robinson, the strongly pro-Israel position adopted by Reform UK and the use of support for Israel to legitimise anti-Muslim political narratives. The book highlights the opposition of British Jewish organisations to these alliances and makes clear that the actions of the Israeli government must never be attributed to Jewish people collectively.Throughout, the investigation remains critical of Israeli occupation, settlement expansion and military conduct while firmly rejecting antisemitism and conspiracy theories. It recognises the rights and security of Israeli civilians, condemns attacks by Hamas and insists that these crimes cannot justify collective punishment or the denial of Palestinian freedom. This is not a book against Jewish people or Judaism. It is a critical examination of governments, institutions, corporations and political networks. It asks whether Britain’s support for Israel has weakened democratic accountability, compromised the consistent application of international law and placed strategic interests above Palestinian lives.Clear, accessible and thought-provoking, this book is for readers interested in British politics, lobbying, Israel and Palestine, surveillance, defence, public-sector data and the hidden networks that shape government decisions. It challenges readers to look beyond official statements and consider who benefits from Britain’s strategic relationship with Israel-and who continues to pay its human cost.
