Die Untersuchung natürlicher Verbindungen war bislang die erfolgreichste Strategie zur Entdeckung neuer Medikamente, sowohl in zahlenmäßiger als auch in kommerzieller Hinsicht. Etwa 50 % aller Arzneimittel sind nämlich natürliche Verbindungen, die von natürlichen Verbindungen abgeleitet sind, oder synthetische Verbindungen, die von natürlichen Verbindungen inspiriert sind, und ihr Jahresumsatz wurde 1999 auf etwa 16 Milliarden US-Dollar geschätzt. In den letzten zehn Jahren wurden etwa 500 neue chemische Einheiten zugelassen, von denen die Hälfte in irgendeiner Weise auf natürlich vorkommende Verbindungen zurückgeführt werden kann.
