A tuberculose bovina está entre as doenças zoonóticas mais importantes e é causada pelo Mycobacterium bovis, que afeta seres humanos e muitos animais. É caracterizada pelo desenvolvimento de tubérculos/granulomas em diferentes órgãos e tecidos. Esta doença está amplamente distribuída em todo o mundo, causando grandes prejuízos económicos na produção animal e sendo uma causa frequente de tuberculose em humanos. É uma doença endémica na Etiópia, mas não tem recebido muita atenção em termos de investigação e estratégias de controlo, e as estratégias de teste e controlo do abate não são aplicadas devido às limitações económicas. Além disso, não há informações adequadas e abrangentes sobre vigilância e, devido à falta de instalações de diagnóstico e reagentes, há poucas informações sobre a epidemiologia molecular ou as características genotípicas das estirpes de Mycobacterium bovis que circulam atualmente na nossa população bovina. Portanto, é importante conhecer as estirpes utilizadas para examinar as relações entre o hospedeiro e o patógeno, a fim de monitorizar a transmissão e a propagação da doença entre o gado.
