Isie Phillips was a normal kid; right up until her tenth birthday. After that, strange things started tohappen. She began to have dreams with magical events. Then the magic started to happen in real life. And if that wasn’t enough, her bracelet she had worn since her earliest days at the orphanage, began tospeak to her. She might have been suspicious that she was going crazy if it wasn’t for the fact that thethings the bracelet said turned out to be true. She had always been prone to getting into mischief, so like any ten-year-old fourth grade student ontheir first day of school, she was warned by her adoptive mom to stay out of trouble. Things were goinggreat right up until the biggest bully at Sunshine Elementary started shoving a new kid named Wesley tothe ground. And she was ready to just walk away, right up until the bully gave the new kid a black eye.She couldn’t stand by and do nothing while he beat up a kid half his size. With the help of her black beltin Chinese Gong-fu, she even managed to keep Wesley from getting hurt any further. And she wouldhave stayed out of trouble altogether too, if she hadn’t had a small lapse in judgement and given thatbully a black eye.So, Isie Phillips did not stay out of trouble, even though her mom was a teacher at Sunshine Elementary. It didn’t help that she was already well acquainted with Principal Franklin because of her frequent visitsto his office in the past. No, she didn’t stay out of trouble, but she did end up making a new best friendwho would teach her the true meaning of loyalty and faithfulness.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
