In modernen Industrieanlagen ist die Verteilung der vernetzten Geräte oftmals sehr komplex und der direkte Zugang nur schwer möglich. Aus diesem Grund wurden NMS (Netzwerkmanagementsysteme) entwickelt, um die Handhabung derartiger Anlagen mittels Fernkonfiguration, Fernüberwachung und Ferndiagnose zu ermöglichen. Dabei sind auf der Management und Kontrollebene TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol)-basierte und mit SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) überwachbare Systeme weit verbreitet, während auf der Feldebene oftmals nicht TCP/IP-basierte Übertragungsprotokolle, wie beispielsweise IO-Link, zum Einsatz kommen. Ziel ist es, SNMP-basiertes Netzwerkmanagement auch auf die Feldebene auszudehnen, indem Schnittstellen zu IO-Link geschaffen werden. Es soll einerseits möglich sein, über SNMP die Geräteeigenschaften des IO-Link Gateway und der damit verbundenen IO-Link Devices auszulesen. Gleichzeitig sollen über den Protokollstandard LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) die Topologieinformationen der IO-Link Gateways und der daran angeschlossenen Devices gespeichert und über SNMP ausgelesen werden können. Diese Informationen können dann von einem Netzwerkmanagementtool verwendet werden, um eine Netzwerktopologie abzubilden.
