Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os principais factores que afectam a escolha dos alunos pela Língua e Literatura Inglesas como área de estudo. O estudo foi realizado com alunos do primeiro ano do CSSH no ano letivo de 2015/16. Foram utilizados métodos quantitativos e qualitativos para recolher dados através de um questionário e de uma entrevista. Entre os 555 alunos da faculdade, 112 alunos de todos os departamentos participaram no questionário e 22 alunos participaram na entrevista. Para o questionário, foi utilizada a técnica de amostragem aleatória estratificada, enquanto que para a entrevista foi utilizada a amostragem intencional. Os dados recolhidos através do questionário foram analisados com recurso à estatística descritiva, à frequência e à percentagem, ao passo que a análise descritiva e interpretativa foi utilizada para analisar os dados qualitativos recolhidos através da entrevista. Os resultados do estudo revelaram que a escolha dos alunos é influenciada principalmente pela disponibilidade de oportunidades de emprego.
