A poluição industrial, juntamente com as águas residuais domésticas, agrícolas e urbanas, contamina os rios e torna difícil o tratamento da água para remover todos os poluentes. Esta poluição pode afetar a qualidade dos rios, a qualidade de vida dos animais aquáticos e também afetar a saúde humana através do consumo de água. Para melhorar a qualidade da água, a nanotecnologia tem sido estudada como uma alternativa para uma melhor remoção de poluentes, como metais pesados, separação de águas oleosas e atividade antimicrobiana. Além disso, com o aumento da industrialização e a poluição dos rios, a água do mar pode ser uma fonte alternativa interessante de água potável após tratamento adequado. Os nanomateriais estão a ser estudados como uma possibilidade de remover o sal da água do mar e torná-la potável. No entanto, é necessário clarificar os potenciais riscos que estes nanomateriais podem causar ao ambiente. Por conseguinte, o objetivo desta revisão é descrever a aplicação da nanotecnologia no tratamento de águas residuais no que diz respeito a metais, remoção de óleo da água, atividade antimicrobiana e dessalinização, a fim de melhorar a qualidade da água e também discutir o seu potencial risco para o ambiente.
