A principal vantagem da XML é a possibilidade de a utilizar para obter dados de um programa como o MSSQL (Microsoft SQL), convertê-los em XML e, em seguida, partilhar esse XML com uma série de outros programas e plataformas. Cada uma destas plataformas receptoras pode então converter o XML numa estrutura que a plataforma utiliza normalmente, e acabámos de comunicar entre duas plataformas que são potencialmente muito diferentes.
