Mesmo quase 30 anos após o acontecimento histórico ocorrido na Roménia em 1989, geralmente referido como revolução, os investigadores continuam divididos quanto à natureza da queda da ditadura de Ceausescu. A presente obra é uma contribuição para a questão de saber se se tratou de uma revolta popular pura, de um golpe de Estado ou, antes, de um híbrido das variantes mencionadas. Para apoiar a tese relacionada com a última possibilidade, são citados autores da própria Roménia e de países ocidentais (por exemplo, Ruxandra Cesereanu e Antonia Rados), sendo central a tomada do poder pela Frente de Salvação Nacional. No entanto, também são analisados os acontecimentos em Timișoara, que, como revolta popular pura, lançaram as bases para a queda da ditadura. Por fim, pretende-se mostrar que ambas as abordagens têm a sua razão de ser.
