Os levantamentos das praias e da zona costeira são realizados de diversas formas, sendo o método mais comum o do nível e trânsito, devido ao seu baixo custo, rapidez e elevada precisão. Mais especificamente, os levantamentos das praias são realizados para compreender melhor os processos de transporte de sedimentos transversais e longitudinais, bem como para quantificar as variações de volume, que são utilizadas para avaliar o comportamento da praia. Neste estudo, uma secção da praia de Sand Key, na Flórida, foi levantada e analisada utilizando tanto um método linear como um não-linear. O objetivo deste estudo é criar uma superfície realista entre os perfis da praia que se encontram relativamente distantes uns dos outros. O método de contorno habitualmente utilizado (um método linear) pode criar discrepâncias entre as principais unidades morfológicas, por exemplo, a crista de uma barra, caso estas apresentem elevações diferentes ao longo da costa. Os perfis gerados utilizando o método não-linear apresentado neste livro corresponderam mais fielmente ao perfil medido do que os obtidos com o método linear.
