In diesem Buch wird die Entwicklung eines kostengünstigen eingebetteten drahtlosen Smart-Home-Prototypsystems zur Steuerung von Haushaltsgeräten in einem Gebäude vorgestellt. Das System bietet eine freundliche Benutzeroberfläche auf Basis einer Android-Anwendung für Smartphones zur Steuerung von Geräten und Vorrichtungen von überall auf der Welt mit einer IP-Konnektivität für den Zugriff auf den eingebetteten Mikro-Webserver. Dieses System verwendet eine Arduino-Ethernet-Schnittstelle, auf der ein einfacher Daten-Webserver läuft, um einen Personalcomputer als Server zu vermeiden und die Gesamtkosten des Systems gering zu halten. Für die Kommunikation zwischen dem Mikro-Webserver-Knoten und den Endknoten werden XBee-Module verwendet. Was ZigBee von anderen unterscheidet, ist die einfache Handhabung, der extrem niedrige Stromverbrauch, die Kosteneffizienz, die Zuverlässigkeit, die geringe Latenzzeit und die Unterstützung einer großen Anzahl von angeschlossenen Knoten in einem einzigen Kontrollnetzwerk.
