Para crear software que se considere inteligente, resulta útil comenzar con una definición de inteligencia. La inteligencia se puede definir simplemente como un conjunto de propiedades de la mente, estas propiedades incluyen la capacidad de planificar, resolver problemas y, en general, razonar. Una definición más simple podría ser que la inteligencia es la capacidad de tomar la decisión correcta dado un conjunto de entradas y una variedad de acciones posibles.Usando esta simple definición de inteligencia (tomar la decisión correcta), podemos aplicarla no solo a los humanos, sino también a los animales que exhiben un comportamiento racional, pero la inteligencia que exhiben los seres humanos es mucho más compleja que la de los animales.
