Durch die Unterordnung der Politik unter den Markt hat dieses Modell zu einer Verwässerung der Verantwortung und einer Aushöhlung des Rechtsstaats geführt und die Demokratie auf einen einfachen Verfahrensmechanismus reduziert, der seines ethischen Saftes beraubt wurde. Die Reform des Parteiensystems, die hier mit wissenschaftlicher Genauigkeit analysiert wird, offenbart ein Paradoxon: Weit davon entfernt, das politische Spiel zu stabilisieren, hat sie die Machtkonzentration verschärft, die Institutionen in Instrumente der Ausgrenzung verwandelt und das Misstrauen der Bürger verschärft. Die Ästhetik dieser Überlegungen liegt in ihrer chirurgischen Klarheit, die die Symptome einer Legitimität in Agonie aufdeckt. Der Autor schlägt den 'Aufstand des Geistes' für einen anderen Gesellschaftsvertrag vor.
